Tokyo’s prettiest sakura canal — 800 cherry trees over the Meguro river, lantern-lit at night, indie cafes year-round.

Nakameguro wraps both banks of the Meguro river, 5 min west of Ebisu — 800 cherry trees were planted along the canal in the 1920s and form a 4km tunnel that fills with hanami crowds for two weeks every late March. Off-sakura, it’s an indie café and Starbucks-Reserve-Roastery destination wijk.

Character of the District

Nakameguro canal sakura at night

The canal is the wijk. 4km of trees, lantern-lit nightly during sakura (last week of March), with riverside bars selling pink prosecco in plastic cups during peak. Off-sakura it’s a slower walk: indie boutiques, Starbucks Reserve Roastery (the second of six worldwide, a 4-floor coffee theatre by Kengo Kuma), and the Cow Books / Lonely Planet pilgrimage shops on the south bank.

For the same low-key west-Tokyo vibe with bigger boutique shops and a designer-bookshop centrepiece, head 10 min walk north to Daikanyama — Tsutaya T-Site and Hillside Terrace.

  • Starbucks Reserve has a 60-min queue at peak. Visit weekday morning or after 21:00 to skip.
  • Walk to Daikanyama, not the train. 10 min north along the canal + Komazawa-dori.
