Ehime Prefecture

Ehime Prefecture

Ancient hot springs, island cycling routes, and a castle town on Japan's least-crowded main island

Ehime Prefecture combines the original-keep Matsuyama Castle, the 3,000-year-old Dogo Onsen Honkan bathhouse, the famous 70km Shimanami Kaido cycling route, the henro-pilgrim Ishiteji Temple, and the original Uwajima Castle. This guide covers the prefecture's anchors plus its lesser-known coast and inland gorges.

Ehime is Shikoku's most rewarding prefecture for first-timers — combining the original-keep Matsuyama Castle, the 3,000-year-old Dogo Onsen Honkan bathhouse, the world-famous Shimanami Kaido cycling route across six Inland Sea islands to Hiroshima Prefecture, the henro-pilgrim 51st-temple Ishiteji Temple, and Japan's other small-but-original Uwajima Castle in the south.
